Pros and Cons

Pros

  • $0 annual fee
  • 5% back (5 points per $1) on Guitar Center purchases
  • 0% equal-payment plans of 24 or 48 months on select brands (purchases through December 25, 2026)
  • Certificates usable in store, online or by phone

Cons

  • 34.99% purchase APR
  • The 6-month plan is deferred interest, charged from the purchase date if not paid in full
  • Works only at Guitar Center
  • Points expire after 12 months and certificates after 90 days
  • No sign-up bonus
  • $1.99 monthly paper statement fee

The Guitar Center Gear Card is a $0-annual-fee store card from Synchrony Bank that works only at Guitar Center. It pays 5% back in Guitar Center certificates, and Guitar Center has dated 0% financing on select gear through December 25, 2026.

The short answer is: if you spend $150 a month at Guitar Center and pay in full, the card returns $90 a year in certificates, $54 more than a flat 2% cash back card. The catch is a 34.99% purchase APR and a 6-month plan that is deferred interest, so a balance you carry wipes out the rewards fast.

Who This Card Is For

Profile A is the regular Guitar Center shopper. Take a gigging musician who spends $150 a month ($1,800 a year) on strings, sticks, cables, repairs and the occasional pedal. That is 9,000 points, or nine $10 certificates, so $90 a year. You earn a certificate’s worth of points about every six weeks.

Profile B is one big purchase, like a $1,500 amp or guitar on a 0% equal-payment plan. Over 24 months that is $62.50 a month, over 48 months $31.25 a month, with $0 interest if every payment is made. These plans apply only to select brands and to purchases through December 25, 2026.

Profile C should skip it. Someone who spends $25 a month on strings and picks ($300 a year) earns one certificate, and the leftover 500 points need another $100 of spending within 12 months or they expire. Anyone who might carry a balance should skip it too.

Sign-Up Bonus: Is It Worth It?

There is no sign-up bonus right now. Guitar Center has run limited-time first-purchase discounts in the past, but none is available today, so plan on the standing rewards only.

For Profile A, first-year value is “$0 bonus + $90 in certificates – $0 fee = $90.” If a welcome offer matters to you, read how credit card sign-up bonuses work before you apply anywhere.

Earning Rewards: The Math

The card earns 5 points per $1 at Guitar Center stores, on guitarcenter.com and by phone. Every 1,000 points is a $10 certificate, which means one certificate for every $200 you spend. Rewards arrive only in $10 steps, so the table rounds down to whole certificates. The spend levels are examples, not Guitar Center figures.

Monthly Guitar Center spend Points per month Points per year Certificates per year Flat 2% card
$100 500 6,000 $60 $24
$200 1,000 12,000 $120 $48
$500 2,500 30,000 $300 $120

Fees and finance charges earn no points, and points expire 12 months after you earn them. Outside Guitar Center the card can’t be used, so it earns $0 anywhere else.

A flat 2% cash back card on $150 a month at Guitar Center earns $36 a year in cash you can spend anywhere. The Gear Card turns the same $150 into $90 in Guitar Center certificates, $54 more, but only if you keep shopping there. For the bigger picture on this trade-off, see are store credit cards worth it.

Redeeming Rewards

Redemption is simple. Each 1,000 points becomes a $10 Rewards certificate, up to $100 per certificate. You can use certificates in a Guitar Center store, on guitarcenter.com or by phone, up to $500 of certificates per transaction. They can’t be turned into cash or used to buy gift certificates.

The trap is that two clocks are running. Points expire 12 months after you earn them, and each certificate expires 90 days after it is issued. A light shopper can lose value on both, like Profile C’s 500 leftover points. A heavy shopper who forgets a certificate in a drawer loses $10 at a time.

Fees and Costs

The annual fee is $0, so there is nothing to break even against. The cost is the interest. The card carries a 34.99% purchase APR and a penalty APR of up to 39.99%. As a simple annual approximation, carrying $1,000 costs about $350 a year in interest. Profile A’s $90 of yearly rewards is wiped out by a balance of about $257 ($90 / 0.3499). For context on how high that rate is, see what APR means and the credit card APR Index.

Other costs: a $2.00 minimum interest charge, a late or returned payment fee of up to $41 ($30 if you paid on time in each of the prior six billing cycles), and a $1.99 monthly paper statement fee, which is $23.88 a year, more than a quarter of Profile A’s $90. A foreign transaction fee doesn’t apply, because the card works only at Guitar Center in the U.S. The card’s rate and fee table lists no balance transfers or cash advances.

Promotional financing

Guitar Center offers two different kinds of plan, and they are not alike.

  • 24- and 48-month plans: 0% interest with equal monthly payments, on select brands, for purchases from October 29 through December 25, 2026. No interest is charged on the amount financed as long as you make the equal payments.
  • 6-month plan: “no interest if paid in full within 6 months,” on purchases January 1 through December 31, 2026. This is deferred interest. If the promo balance isn’t paid in full in six months, interest is charged from the purchase date.

Here’s the math on a $1,200 purchase. Pay $200 a month and you owe $0 interest. But if you are still $100 short at month 6, interest is charged from the purchase date. If the whole $1,200 had been carried for six months, that is about $1,200 x 34.99% x 6/12 = $209.94, roughly $210 (an upper-end approximation, since paying it down along the way lowers it). Being $100 short can cost about twice the shortfall. Read deferred interest explained and try the deferred interest calculator before you pick the 6-month plan.

How It Compares

No head-to-head music-store card is published on FinBedrock, so the useful comparison is with the two published 5% store cards and a flat 2% card.

Feature Guitar Center Gear Card This review My Best Buy Credit Card Amazon Store Card
Issuer Synchrony Bank Citi Synchrony Bank
Annual fee $0 $0 at the standard tier $0

It is the same 5%-in-store idea. The Gear Card has the highest APR of the three, and its certificates expire 90 days after they are issued. On the same $150 a month, a flat 2% card earns $36 in cash with no store restriction. See the full My Best Buy Credit Card review and the Amazon Store Card review.

Nick’s Verdict

Nick Buinenko · Founder, FinBedrock

2.8/5

Based on verified data, this card makes sense for two kinds of buyers: musicians who spend $150 or more a month at Guitar Center and pay in full, and someone who wants a 0% equal-payment plan on a big select-brand purchase before December 25, 2026.

Skip it if you shop at Guitar Center only now and then, if you might carry a balance, or if the 6-month deferred plan tempts you without a payoff plan. At 34.99%, one missed payoff costs more than a year of rewards.

For a $150-a-month Guitar Center shopper, this card returns $90 a year in certificates, $54 more than a flat 2% card. If you shop at several stores, compare it with the best store credit cards first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Guitar Center Gear Card worth it?

It is worth it for regular Guitar Center shoppers who pay in full. At $150 a month ($1,800 a year) the card earns $90 a year in certificates, $54 more than a flat 2% card. At $25 a month it earns one $10 certificate, only $4 more than a flat 2% card, which is not worth a new account and a 34.99% APR. Anyone who expects to carry a balance should skip it.

What credit score do you need for the Guitar Center Gear Card?

Synchrony Bank doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for this card. For what store card issuers tend to look at, read our guide on what credit score you need for a store credit card.

Guitar Center Gear Card vs My Best Buy Credit Card: which is better?

Both pay 5% back in store certificates with no annual fee at the standard tier. The Gear Card has the higher APR (34.99% vs 27.99% to 30.99%), and its certificates expire 90 days after they are issued. The better one is whichever store you actually shop at. See the My Best Buy Credit Card review.

Does the Guitar Center Gear Card have foreign transaction fees?

A foreign transaction fee doesn’t apply, because the Guitar Center Gear Card works only at Guitar Center in the U.S.

Can I use the Guitar Center Gear Card anywhere else?

No. The card works only at Guitar Center: in U.S. stores, on guitarcenter.com or by phone. It is issued by Synchrony Bank, and it carries no Visa or Mastercard logo. Read more in our Synchrony Bank guide.

How does Guitar Center’s 0% financing work?

There are two kinds of plan. The 24- and 48-month plans are 0% interest with equal monthly payments, on select brands, for purchases through December 25, 2026. The 6-month plan (2026 purchases) is deferred interest: if you don’t pay in full within six months, interest is charged from the purchase date. See deferred interest explained.

Do Guitar Center Gear Card rewards expire?

Yes, twice. Points expire 12 months after you earn them, and each $10 certificate expires 90 days after it is issued.
