American Express Credit Cards

Amex is the premium end of the rewards market. The Platinum Card and Gold Card carry the credit card industry’s biggest pile of stackable statement credits — for travel, dining, streaming, and more — plus lounge access that’s hard to match elsewhere. Membership Rewards points transfer to a strong set of airline partners (thinner on hotels), which is where most of the real redemption value lives.
Two things make Amex different to plan around. First, its cards split into “charge cards” (no preset spending limit, balance due in full) like Platinum and Gold, versus standard credit cards like the Blue Cash family — they behave differently for approval and balance-carrying. Second, Amex enforces its own welcome-bonus rule: you’re generally limited to one bonus per card, ever, rather than a rolling time window like Chase’s 5/24. If you’ve held a specific Amex card before, don’t expect its bonus again.
Outside of travel, the Blue Cash Preferred and Blue Cash Everyday cards are Amex’s answer for everyday grocery and gas spending without the premium price tag.
