Cardholders report a straightforward deal with the Techron Advantage® Visa Card: an automatic 3-cent-per-gallon discount at every participating Chevron and Texaco pump, no activation, no annual fee, issued by Synchrony Bank on the Visa network. Based on verified issuer data, this review walks through what that’s actually worth, plus the extra discount layered on top based on other Visa spending.

The short answer: for a driver buying 40 gallons a month at Chevron or Texaco and putting $300 a month in other purchases on the card, this works out to $65.60 net in year one and $43.20 a year ongoing, against a $0.

This isn’t a points card. There’s no currency to track, no portal to shop through, just a per-gallon discount that gets bigger the more a cardholder spends elsewhere on the same card. That simplicity is the whole pitch, and also, as the math below shows, part of the tradeoff.

Who This Card Is For

This card’s value comes down to two numbers: how much fuel gets bought at Chevron or Texaco, and how much else goes on the card each month.

At the baseline profile, 40 gallons a month at Chevron or Texaco plus $300 a month in other Visa spending (groceries, utilities, anything that isn’t fuel and isn’t at Chevron/Texaco), the combined discount lands at 9 cents a gallon, worth $43.20 a year ongoing and $65.60 net in year one with the sign-up boost included.

Spend more elsewhere and the discount scales up. A cardholder putting $500 or more a month in other Visa purchases hits the top tier, 13 cents a gallon combined, worth $62.40 a year on the same 40 gallons of fuel.

At the other end, a driver fueling at Chevron or Texaco but with little or no other spend on the card still earns $14.40 a year from the unconditional base discount alone. That 3-cent-per-gallon rate never drops to $0 for a Chevron/Texaco fueler, even with zero other card activity.

Skip this card entirely if Chevron and Texaco aren’t where you normally fuel up. Every dollar of this card’s reward mechanism, base and spend-tier alike, pays out only at those pumps; it’s a Visa usable anywhere, but the discount itself isn’t. Anyone who wants real cash back or points on everyday non-fuel spending should also look elsewhere; that $300-to-$500-a-month in “other” spend earns nothing on its own here, it only unlocks a bigger fuel discount. See Best Credit Cards for Gas for cards that earn everywhere.

Techron Advantage® Visa Card’s issuer, Synchrony Bank, doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for this card; see What Is a Good Credit Score to Get Approved for a Credit Card? for general guidance. What Is Synchrony Bank? covers the issuer behind this and several other store and gas cards.

Applying triggers a hard inquiry on your credit report like any other card; see Do Store Credit Cards Hurt Your Credit? for how that and a new account affect your score.

Is There a Welcome Bonus?

Not in the traditional points-or-cash-back sense. New accounts opened between October 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027 get an extra 62 cents off per gallon at Chevron and Texaco pumps for the first 30 days, on top of the everyday 3-cent base discount, for a combined 65 cents off per gallon during that window. It’s automatic from account opening, with no minimum spend required.

The official terms describe only that combined 65-cent figure, and don’t say whether the Visa Spend Fuel Discount tier stacks on top of it during the same 30 days. Rather than guess, this review uses only the confirmed 65-cent rate for month one, not 65 cents plus an extra spend-tier bonus.

On 40 gallons bought in that first 30-day window, 40 gallons times 65 cents a gallon comes to $26.00.

Combine that with the ongoing baseline rate for the remaining 11 months of year one (9 cents a gallon on the same 40 gallons, $3.60 a month, $39.60 for 11 months), and the full first-year total comes to $26.00 plus $39.60, equaling $65.60 net in year one, against a $0 annual fee.

Worth noting: this offer is time-bound. It applies only to accounts opened between 10/1/2026 and 3/31/2027, and will need re-verification once that window closes.

Earning Rewards: The Math

The Techron Advantage® Visa Card doesn’t use a points system at all. Instead, two discount mechanics stack on top of each other at the pump, unlike a points card where spending in one category just means not earning in another.

Mechanic Rate Monthly (40 gal) Monthly Savings Annual Value
Base Fuel Discount (Chevron/Texaco) 3 cents/gal 40 gal $1.20 $14.40
Visa Spend Fuel Discount ($300/mo other spend, $300-$399.99 tier) +6 cents/gal 40 gal $2.40 $28.80
Combined ongoing rate 9 cents/gal 40 gal $3.60 $43.20

The Base Fuel Discount applies unconditionally, 3 cents off every gallon at participating Chevron and Texaco stations, from day one, regardless of anything else spent on the card. The Visa Spend Fuel Discount layers an extra discount on top, sized by how much gets spent on other (non-fuel, non-Chevron/Texaco) Visa purchases that billing period. At $300 a month in other spend, that’s the $300-$399.99 tier, worth an extra 6 cents a gallon. Together, that’s 9 cents a gallon combined, $3.60 a month, $43.20 a year on 40 gallons, the ongoing rate behind this review’s $65.60 net year-one figure once the sign-up boost is added in.

Spend more elsewhere and the rate climbs further. At $500 or more a month in other Visa spending, the top tier, 40 gallons times 13 cents a gallon (3-cent base plus 10-cent Visa Spend Fuel Discount) works out to $5.20 a month, $62.40 a year.

There’s a combined $300-per-year cap on Visa Spend Fuel Discounts specifically, but it’s essentially never a real constraint: hitting it would take roughly 250 gallons of fuel a month (250 gallons times 10 cents times 12 months equals $300), far beyond any realistic personal driving volume.

Here’s the honest math against a flat cash-back card. At the baseline profile, $140 a month in fuel (40 gallons times $3.50) plus $300 a month in other Visa spend comes to $440 a month, $5,280 a year in total spend. A flat 2% cash-back card earns 2% of $5,280, $105.60 a year, on that same spend, usable anywhere. This card earns $43.20 a year ongoing on the identical spend, less than half what the flat 2% card pays, even though every dollar of that $300 “other” spend counts toward unlocking the bigger per-gallon discount. This card’s case rests on an unconditional, no-fee pump-side discount, not on out-earning a generic cash-back card.

Redeeming Rewards

Both discounts apply automatically. Depending on the pump’s dispenser, they post as an instant per-gallon discount right at checkout, or as a statement credit on qualifying Chevron/Texaco fuel purchases.

There’s no points balance to track, no redemption portal to log into, and no minimum threshold to clear beyond the spend tiers themselves. Nothing expires either, aside from the once-a-year reset on the $300 Visa Spend Fuel Discount cap, which doesn’t forfeit anything already earned, it just starts the clock over on January 1.

There are no transfer partners, because there’s nothing to transfer. This is about as simple as a rewards mechanic gets, on par with the at-pump discount on the Exxon Mobil Smart Card+™, another card where the “redemption” is just a lower number at checkout. That simplicity cuts both ways: there’s no portal to optimize for extra value, but also nothing to lose track of.

Fees and Costs

$0 here, no annual fee at all, so there’s nothing to break even against.

The APR is a flat 33.99% variable rate on both purchases and cash advances, with no creditworthiness-based range; everyone who’s approved gets the same rate. See What Is APR? How Credit Card Interest Works for how that compounds on a carried balance. There’s no introductory 0% APR period on this card, on purchases or anything else.

Cash advances cost $10 or 5% of the amount, whichever is greater, on top of that same 33.99% APR.

Foreign transaction fee: 3%. In practice, a 3% foreign transaction fee applies to every purchase made outside the US; see What Is a Foreign Transaction Fee? for how that adds up on a trip abroad.

Balance transfers aren’t offered on this card, inferred from the complete absence of a balance-transfer row in Synchrony’s official Rates and Fees Table for this product.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • Automatic 3-cent-per-gallon discount at every Chevron and Texaco fill-up, no activation needed
  • Up to 10 cents a gallon more based on other Visa spending, usable anywhere Visa is accepted, not closed-loop
  • New accounts get a 62-cent-per-gallon boost for the first 30 days, no minimum spend required

Cons:

  • Flat 33.99% variable APR with no introductory 0% offer of any kind
  • The entire discount mechanism, base and spend-tier alike, pays out only at Chevron and Texaco pumps; fueling elsewhere earns $0 regardless of other card spend
  • No cash back or points of any kind on non-fuel spending; it only sizes a bigger fuel discount
  • Synchrony doesn’t publish a minimum credit score, so approval odds are hard to assess upfront

How It Compares

The closest direct competitor is bp rewards Visa®, another $0-annual-fee, Visa-network gas-brand card pairing an automatic per-gallon discount with earning tied to other spend, and usable anywhere Visa is accepted.

Feature Techron Advantage® Visa Card bp rewards Visa®
Annual fee $0 $0
Fuel benefit 3 cents/gal base, +2-10 cents/gal by other Visa spend, at Chevron/Texaco 15 cents/gal at bp/Amoco (30 cents first 60 days)
Non-fuel rewards None directly, other spend only sizes the fuel discount 5x bp/Amoco, 3x groceries/dining, 1x else (points)
Works outside the brand? Yes, Visa, usable anywhere Yes, Visa, usable anywhere

bp rewards Visa® is the better pick for someone who wants real points on groceries and dining on top of a fuel discount. Techron Advantage® Visa Card’s case is a lower, simpler floor, an unconditional 3-cent base that scales up the more a cardholder spends elsewhere, with nothing to track beyond that.

Exxon Mobil Smart Card+™ is worth a brief mention too: it can edge this card on pure per-gallon savings for loyal Exxon or Mobil fuelers, but it’s a closed-loop card, unusable and earning $0 anywhere outside Exxon and Mobil stations, unlike this card’s Visa network.

A different-mechanic alternative worth a glance too: the Speedway rewards card skips the per-gallon-discount structure entirely in favor of a 50x points rate at Speedway fuel and in-store purchases, redeemed through a gift-card-and-merchandise catalog rather than an automatic discount — a bigger headline number, but tied to one brand and with no cash-back path.

Verizon customers have another open-network option: the Verizon Visa® Card pays an uncapped 4% in Verizon Dollars on gas at any station, plus 4% on groceries and restaurants, but only Verizon wireless and Fios account holders can apply.

Nick’s Verdict

Based on verified data, the Techron Advantage® Visa Card returns $65.60 net in year one and $43.20 a year ongoing for a driver buying 40 gallons of fuel a month at Chevron or Texaco plus $300 a month in other Visa spending, all with no annual fee.

Apply for this card if Chevron or Texaco is where you regularly fuel up and you want a genuinely simple, no-fee discount that scales up with other Visa spending, with nothing to track or redeem.

Skip it if you don’t fuel at Chevron or Texaco regularly; the card still works as a Visa everywhere, but the entire reward mechanism pays $0 off-brand. Skip it too if you want real rewards on non-fuel spending, or if you might carry a balance, given the flat 33.99% APR with no introductory offer to soften it.

The honest finding here: this card’s ongoing math loses to a flat 2% cash-back card on identical spend, $43.20 a year against $105.60. Its case rests on an unconditional pump-side discount and brand habit, not raw earning power. See Best Credit Cards for Gas for how it stacks up against the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Techron Advantage® Visa Card worth it with no annual fee?

For a regular Chevron or Texaco fueler, yes. On a baseline profile of 40 gallons of fuel a month at Chevron or Texaco plus $300 a month in other Visa spending, the card returns $65.60 net in year one and $43.20 a year ongoing, with a $0 annual fee.

That value depends entirely on fueling at Chevron or Texaco. A driver who fuels elsewhere earns $0 from this card’s reward mechanism, no matter how much else they spend on it.

What credit score do you need for the Techron Advantage® Visa Card?

Synchrony Bank, the card’s issuer, doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for this card, and no reliable source confirms one either. There’s no number to share here.

For more on how credit scores affect approval odds generally, see What Is a Good Credit Score to Get Approved for a Credit Card?

Techron Advantage® Visa Card vs bp rewards Visa®: which is better?

The bp rewards Visa® is the better pick for someone who wants real points on groceries and dining on top of a fuel discount. The Techron Advantage® Visa Card’s case is a lower, simpler floor, an unconditional 3-cent-per-gallon base that scales up the more a cardholder spends elsewhere, with nothing to track beyond that.

Does the Techron Advantage® Visa Card have foreign transaction fees?

Yes, a 3% foreign transaction fee applies to purchases made outside the US.

See What Is a Foreign Transaction Fee? for how that cost adds up on a trip abroad.

Does the Techron Advantage® Visa Card have a sign-up bonus?

Not a traditional points or cash-back bonus. New accounts opened between October 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027 get an extra 62 cents off per gallon at Chevron and Texaco pumps for the first 30 days, on top of the everyday 3-cent base discount, for a combined 65 cents off per gallon during that window. It’s automatic, with no minimum spend required.

On 40 gallons bought in that window, that’s $26.00, part of this review’s $65.60 net year-one total. The offer is time-bound and only applies to accounts opened in that window.

Does the Techron Advantage® Visa Card offer balance transfers?

No. Neither official Synchrony Rates and Fees Table lists a balance-transfer APR or fee row for this card, which is the basis for recording balance transfers as not offered.

Can I use the Techron Advantage® Visa Card discount anywhere besides Chevron and Texaco?

The card itself works anywhere Visa is accepted, but the fuel discount, both the base 3-cent-per-gallon rate and the Visa Spend Fuel Discount tiers, posts only at participating Chevron and Texaco stations.

That’s still an advantage over the fully closed-loop Exxon Mobil Smart Card+™, which can’t be used, and earns nothing, anywhere outside Exxon and Mobil stations.
