Most “best cash-back card” guides start with the same five cards. At Costco, four of them won’t even swipe at the register.
Costco warehouses and Costco gas stations accept Visa only. Mastercard, Discover, and American Express are not accepted in-person. That eliminates a lot of popular cards immediately — including the Citi Double Cash (Mastercard), the Amex Blue Cash Everyday (Amex), and the Discover it Cash Back (Discover).
So the question isn’t “what’s the best cash-back card?” It’s “what’s the best Visa for Costco — and does it depend on how I actually shop there?”
The answer: it depends almost entirely on how much of your Costco spending is gas versus everything else. Here’s the math.
The Short Answer
| Card | Network | In-Warehouse Rate | Costco Gas Rate | Annual Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citi Costco Anywhere Visa | Visa | 2% | 5% at Costco gas / 4% other gas (combined $7,000/year cap) | $0 |
| Wells Fargo Active Cash | Visa | 2% | 2% | $0 |
| Wells Fargo Autograph | Visa | 1% | 3% | $0 |
| Chase Freedom Unlimited | Visa | 1.5% | 1.5% | $0 |
| Citi Double Cash | Mastercard | Not accepted in-warehouse | Not accepted | $0 |
If you fill up at Costco gas regularly, the Citi Costco Anywhere Visa is the only card that pays a meaningfully higher rate on that spend. If you mostly shop in the warehouse and rarely use Costco gas, the Wells Fargo Active Cash earns just as much on in-store purchases and comes with flexible redemptions the Costco card does not offer.
Pick 1: Citi Costco Anywhere Visa | Best for Regular Costco Gas Buyers
Read our full Citi Costco Anywhere Visa review.
The Citi Costco Anywhere Visa is the co-branded card issued in partnership with Costco. It runs on the Visa network, so it works at the register and at the pump.
Rates (verified June 2026 from Citi’s official card page):
- 5% cash back on gas at Costco
- 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging worldwide
- 3% on restaurants and eligible travel, including Costco Travel
- 2% on all other Costco and Costco.com purchases
- 1% on everything else
The 5% and 4% gas rates share a combined cap of $7,000 per year. After that combined gas spend, the rate drops to 1%.
No annual card fee — though you do need an active Costco membership ($65/year for Gold Star, $130/year for Executive).
The math: $300/month Costco gas + $400/month in-warehouse
Spending profile for a typical two-car household that fills up at Costco and does most grocery/household shopping there:
| Category | Annual Spend | Rate | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costco gas | $3,600 | 5% | $180 |
| In-warehouse | $4,800 | 2% | $96 |
| Total | $8,400 | $276/year |
That $240 comes back as a single annual reward certificate, issued each February on your billing statement. You redeem it at any Costco warehouse for cash or merchandise. It cannot be redeemed online or converted to statement credit — more on this in a moment.
Who this card is for
This card earns the most at Costco for members who fill up at Costco gas regularly. The 4% gas rate is the differentiator. On warehouse purchases alone, it earns the same 2% as a flat-rate Visa like the Wells Fargo Active Cash — no advantage there.
If you also spend on dining and travel outside of Costco, the 3% rate on those categories adds meaningful value on top of your Costco spend.
The honest limitation
The annual certificate is the main catch. Every dollar you earn in Costco rewards sits locked until February. You cannot redeem for statement credit, transfer to another account, or use the balance online. If you miss Costco’s redemption window, you lose the certificate.
This is not a dealbreaker if you shop at Costco year-round. It is a real consideration if your Costco membership lapses or your shopping habits change.
Pick 2: Wells Fargo Active Cash | Best Flexible Visa for Costco
Read our full Wells Fargo Active Cash review.
The Wells Fargo Active Cash earns 2% cash rewards on all purchases with no categories, no caps, and no annual fee.
The math: same profile
| Category | Annual Spend | Rate | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costco gas | $3,600 | 2% | $72 |
| In-warehouse | $4,800 | 2% | $96 |
| Total | $8,400 | $168/year |
That’s $108 less than the Costco Anywhere Visa on this profile. The gap comes entirely from gas — on warehouse purchases, both cards earn exactly 2%. They tie completely on in-store shopping.
The $72 annual difference is real. Whether it matters to you depends on how you value the flexibility the Active Cash offers.
Why the Active Cash still belongs on this list
Redemption is flexible. Rewards post as statement credit, or you can redeem to a Wells Fargo checking or savings account, or to a gift card. No waiting until February. No certificate to lose.
No Costco membership required. The Active Cash is a general-purpose card. If your membership lapses or you move somewhere without a nearby warehouse, the card keeps earning 2% on everything.
It works everywhere, not just at Costco. The 2% flat rate applies to all your spending — groceries, Amazon, gas at other stations, utilities. The Costco Anywhere card earns only 1% at most non-Costco merchants.
For members who shop at Costco but don’t fill up there regularly, the Active Cash is very likely the better choice. The $108/year gap disappears entirely if you remove gas from the equation.
Pick 3: Wells Fargo Autograph | Best If Gas Dominates Your Budget
Read our full Wells Fargo Autograph review.
The Wells Fargo Autograph earns 3x points (3% equivalent in cash value) on gas stations, dining, travel, streaming, phone plans, and select other categories. It earns 1x on everything else. No annual fee.
How it performs at Costco
Costco gas stations generally code as gas station purchases (MCC 5541 or 5542), and multiple Autograph cardholders report earning 3x points there. However, Wells Fargo’s terms note that bonus categories depend on merchant coding, and wholesale-club gas stations are not explicitly guaranteed to qualify. In practice, most cardholders see the 3x rate at Costco gas — but Wells Fargo does not officially confirm it, so your results could vary.
In-warehouse purchases at Costco code as wholesale club purchases, not as a bonus category on the Autograph. That means 1% on everything you buy inside the warehouse.
The math: same profile
| Category | Annual Spend | Rate | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costco gas | $3,600 | 3% | $108 |
| In-warehouse | $4,800 | 1% | $48 |
| Total | $8,400 | $156/year |
On this profile, the Autograph earns $156 — which is $12 less than the Active Cash ($168) and $120 less than the Costco Anywhere Visa ($276).
This is the counterintuitive result worth understanding: the Autograph’s 3% gas rate does not compensate for the 1% rate on warehouse purchases when in-store spending is comparable to or larger than gas spending.
The Autograph beats the Active Cash at Costco only when your Costco gas spend exceeds your Costco in-warehouse spend. For most members, that is not the case.
Where the Autograph actually shines: If you spend $500 or more per month on dining and travel outside of Costco, those 3x categories add significant value that has nothing to do with your warehouse habits. In that case the Autograph can earn more overall even if it loses on the Costco portion of your spend.
Best Card for Costco.com
Costco.com accepts Visa and Mastercard. Discover was accepted online until late 2023 but has since been removed. American Express is not accepted at Costco in any form, online or in-person.
That means the Citi Double Cash (Mastercard) works for Costco.com orders.
Read our full Citi Double Cash review.
The Citi Double Cash earns 2% on all purchases (1% when you buy, 1% when you pay). For Costco.com purchases, where the in-warehouse Visa restriction does not apply, it earns the same 2% as the Active Cash — with no annual fee.
If you already carry the Citi Double Cash for everyday spending, there is no reason to swap it out for Costco.com orders. It earns at the same rate as the best Visa options online.
The Citi Costco Anywhere Visa also earns 2% at Costco.com, so if you already hold that card, it handles both in-warehouse and online purchases consistently.
What About Amex and Mastercard In-Warehouse?
They do not work. Costco dropped Amex in June 2016. Mastercard and Discover have never been accepted at Costco warehouses or Costco gas.
This catches people off guard with a few popular cards:
Amex Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred both earn strong rates on groceries. Costco does not code as a grocery store on most networks, and Amex is not accepted at Costco in-person regardless. Neither card is useful at the warehouse or pump.
Citi Double Cash (Mastercard) is one of the best flat-rate cards available, but it will not swipe at the Costco register. It is only relevant for Costco.com orders.
If the card in your wallet is not Visa, it does not work at Costco in-person. Full stop.
The Honest Analysis: When the Costco Anywhere Visa Is Not Worth It
The Citi Costco Anywhere Visa earns the most in this comparison — but only for members who make consistent use of Costco gas. Here is where the math breaks down:
If you never or rarely fill up at Costco gas: The Costco Anywhere Visa earns 2% in-warehouse. So does the Active Cash. They tie completely on warehouse purchases, but the Active Cash offers flexible redemptions and works at 2% everywhere else. The Costco card wins nothing on warehouse-only spend.
If you gas up at Costco but your warehouse spend is much larger than your gas spend: The advantage of 4% on gas starts to shrink relative to the 2% on everything else. At some point the $72 annual gap (on our profile) may not justify the restricted certificate redemption.
If you do not shop at Costco year-round: The annual certificate issued in February becomes a problem if you are not an active warehouse member.
The Active Cash is the simpler, more flexible default. The Costco Anywhere Visa earns more if gas is a meaningful part of your Costco spend — and the advantage is a real $108/year on this profile, not a rounding error. But the rewards still come locked as an annual certificate.
Which Card Should You Use at Costco?
| Your situation | Best card |
|---|---|
| Regular Costco gas buyer + active member | Citi Costco Anywhere Visa |
| Mostly in-warehouse shopping, minimal gas | Wells Fargo Active Cash |
| Heavy gas buyer + dining/travel elsewhere | Wells Fargo Autograph (for non-Costco spend) paired with Active Cash at Costco |
| Costco.com only, no warehouse membership | Citi Double Cash or Wells Fargo Active Cash |
| Already have the Costco Anywhere Visa | Keep it for gas; consider Active Cash for non-Costco spend |
The single most important thing to check before you apply: confirm your card is Visa. Every other optimization is secondary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Costco accept Mastercard?
No. Costco warehouses and Costco gas stations accept Visa only. Mastercard is not accepted in-person at any Costco location. You can use Mastercard on Costco.com, where both Visa and Mastercard are accepted — but not at the physical register or pump.
Does Costco accept American Express?
No. Costco dropped Amex as an accepted payment method in June 2016. American Express cards are not accepted at Costco warehouses, Costco gas stations, or Costco food courts. Amex is also not accepted on Costco.com.
Does Costco code as a grocery store for credit card rewards?
No. Costco warehouses code as wholesale clubs, not as grocery stores or supermarkets. Cards that pay bonus rewards in the grocery category will earn only their base rate at Costco, not the grocery bonus. If you are looking for strong grocery rewards elsewhere, see our best cards for groceries.
What is the best credit card for Costco gas?
The Citi Costco Anywhere Visa earns the highest rate on Costco gas among widely available cards — 5% cash back at Costco gas stations, with a combined $7,000 per year cap for the 5% and 4% gas categories, then 1%.
The Wells Fargo Autograph earns 3% on gas stations, which typically includes Costco gas, though Wells Fargo does not officially guarantee this for wholesale-club locations. The Wells Fargo Active Cash earns a flat 2% on everything. All three are Visa cards and work at Costco pumps.
Is the Citi Costco Anywhere Visa worth it if I do not have other Citi cards?
Yes — the Citi Costco Anywhere Visa works as a standalone card with no other Citi products required.
The main consideration is that rewards accumulate as an annual Costco certificate, redeemable in-warehouse starting in February each year. If you shop at Costco regularly and fill up at Costco gas, the certificate is easy to use. If you prefer flexible cash-back redemptions, a card like the Wells Fargo Active Cash may suit you better.
Can I use a non-Visa card at Costco.com?
Mastercard is accepted at Costco.com. Discover was accepted online until late 2023 but has since been removed. American Express is not accepted at Costco in any form.
The Citi Double Cash (Mastercard) earns 2% on all purchases and works for Costco.com orders, even though it will not swipe at the physical warehouse.
